A Clean Energy Program Built for Westchester

What is Green My Power?

Green My Power makes it possible for anyone to support clean energy and match their electricity use with renewable generation — without installing equipment or changing utility providers.

When wind or solar projects generate electricity, a renewable energy certificate (REC) is created alongside that power. By purchasing and retiring RECs, you ensure that renewable energy is added to the grid on your behalf and that its environmental benefits are claimed only once.

PowerMarket sources your RECs from renewable energy projects across the United States, matched to the amount of electricity you choose, and retires them in a public registry on your behalf. Each REC carries a unique serial number, creating a permanent, verifiable link between your participation and renewable energy generation.

Your dashboard shows the clean energy you've helped add to the grid, the emissions avoided, and how your participation contributes to a more sustainable Westchester.

What it is:

Flat-rate plans from $4/month, less than a cup of coffee
Verified REC retirement on your behalf
Personal dashboard with impact tracking
No utility changes or disruptions

What this is not:

✕
Not a CCA supply program
✕
Not an ESCO contract
✕
Not a utility switch
✕
Not a savings product
Green My Power RECs are sourced from renewable energy facilities located throughout the United States. They cannot be used by an ESCO or other load-serving entity to satisfy compliance obligations under New York’s Clean Energy Standard or to offset usage as part of a retail renewable electricity supply product offered in New York.

There's power in numbers

One household moves a small needle. Thousands of households doing it together signals to utilities, municipalities, and policymakers about where Westchester stands. Here's what 1% enrollment looks like.

Where does your community rank?

Community participation across Westchester

Every municipality in Westchester has a Green My Power score, updated as households enroll. The more your community participates, the higher it climbs.

Rank Town GMP Score Clean Energy (MWh/yr) Progress (goal: 300)
How Scoring Works:
Each community’s score reflects its participation rate, adjusted so that businesses and large accounts count fairly alongside households. A score of 100 represents approximately 1% community participation. A score of 300 represents approximately 3% participation.
Environmental equivalencies are estimations calculated using EPA's Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.
Values reflect renewable energy supported through active participation. REC retirements are processed periodically.

How It Works

From your electricity use to a verified clean energy record — here's the chain of impact your subscription creates.

Fossil Fuel Share of Electricity Generation by State, 2024
1

Your electricity use leaves a footprint

Every home and business draws electricity from a grid that still relies heavily on fossil fuels. This graph reflects the energy mix in the U.S.

Clean power is generated
2

Clean power is generated

Wind and solar farms generate renewable electricity. For every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) produced, one Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) is issued as proof that clean energy was added to the grid.

Your participation is tied to that clean power

RECs based on your estimated electricity usage are retired in a public registry — a permanent, verifiable record that clean energy was generated on your behalf.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Green My Power?
Green My Power is a monthly subscription that supports renewable energy. When you join, Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) are purchased and retired on your behalf, permanently attributing the environmental value of that power to you.
What is a Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)?
A REC represents the environmental benefits of 1,000 units of clean energy, called kilowatt-hours (kWh). They are proof that clean energy was generated and added to the grid by a wind, solar, or other renewable energy project. PowerMarket buys RECs in an amount that matches your plan and retires them permanently on your behalf in a public registry. When a REC is retired on your behalf, it ensures that the unit of clean energy is uniquely claimed and cannot be counted twice.

RECs are a transparent, trackable way to support clean energy, and the same kind of record companies and institutions use to back their sustainability claims.
Will this change my electricity service or my utility bill?
No. Enrollment is 100% digital, and nothing about your electricity service changes.
No solar panels
No equipment
No home upgrades
Green My Power is a separate monthly charge on the payment method you provide - not your utility bill.
Who can participate?
Everyone can. Homeowners, renters, businesses, schools, nonprofits, municipalities, and other institutions can participate. Businesses and institutions can customize their REC volume based on electricity usage or sustainability goals.
How much does it cost, and can I cancel?
Plans start at $4/month for an apartment and increase based on your electricity usage. Businesses and institutions receive a custom plan, with bulk pricing available.

Subscriptions are paid monthly or annually, with no fees to cancel.
How are my RECs tracked and verified?
Upon enrollment, PowerMarket purchases and retires RECs on your behalf on an ongoing basis, usually quarterly. Every REC is assigned a unique serial number that serves as its digital fingerprint, ensuring complete traceability and preventing double-counting.

You'll receive documentation showing details about the renewable energy you're supporting, including:
REC serial numbers
Energy source and generating facility details
Location and date of generation
Quantity of renewable energy generated
Once a REC is retired on your behalf, its renewable energy attributes cannot be claimed by anyone else.
What's the impact of my purchase?
Renewable energy projects earn revenue from the electricity they generate and the renewable energy attributes associated with that electricity. Your subscription creates demand for those renewable energy attributes, which helps fund and support ongoing renewable energy development.
Does this mean my home runs on renewable energy?
Not physically. The electricity coming into your home comes from the regional grid, which carries electricity generated from many different sources.
Who runs the program?
Green My Power is a partnership between Sustainable Westchester and PowerMarket. Sustainable Westchester is the nonprofit that brings together 44 Westchester municipalities on clean energy. PowerMarket runs the platform - enrollment, billing, REC procurement, and reporting.
Can I do this if I have rooftop solar or community solar?
Yes. With rooftop solar, your system reduces how much electricity you draw from the grid. RECs can be used to address some or all of your remaining grid electricity use. With community solar, you receive credits on your utility bill that reduce your electricity costs. Those savings can offset most or all of your REC subscription costs.
Am I really having an impact?
Yes. When you subscribe, Renewable Energy Certificates are sourced from U.S. renewable energy projects and permanently retired on your behalf. That creates a verified record of your support for renewable energy that can't be claimed by anyone else.

You're not changing the electrons being delivered to you. You're creating sustained demand for the clean energy attributes associated with renewable energy, which strengthens the market and provides an additional revenue stream for renewable energy projects.

One customer has a small impact on their own. When thousands of people, businesses, and communities participate, that collective demand sends a stronger market signal.

RECs aren't the only way to support clean energy, but they're one of the most accessible and verifiable options available without installing equipment or changing your electricity service.
